CAGE
Project
Summary
Interactive time-based sculpture with digitally generated materials and field-recorded sources on the contradictory topic of freedom
Description:
The installation is inspired by the expression "free as a bird". Recently this verbal phrase has lost or at least changed it's signification: A bird's freedom is not only restricted by mad animal lovers that lock them up in tiny cages, but recently also through the human mass murdering of this species, resulting from the paranoid discovery of avian influenza.
With this installation, the spectator is being put in the situation of a bird to experience this freedom. the viewer will encounter a different viewpoint of the term "freedom", adapted to the change in the phrase mentioned above...
Two contrasting projections question the rights and wrongs of the brutal human intervention into nature: On one hand, one will see the images of birds, living in freedom, contrasted by a second projection which illustrates today's dark truth of these animal's lives, images related to the bird flu.
Setup and Content
The installation consists of a single space with one projection. The space is separated into 2 environments, whereas the first environment is a (physical) bird cage. According to the spacial position of the spectator the respective projection will be activated. I.e, when the spectator enters the cage, a sensor activates the first projection: images of healthy birds living in freedom. When entering the second environment, a sequence of dark imagery will be activated. By leaving the space, the projections will be completely deactivated.
the images are made up of videos, animation, illustration, accompanied by the texts of bird poems, news cuts about the bird flu and personal statements.
